In today’s globalised world, diversity and inclusivity have become buzzwords that businesses across industries cannot ignore. However, while many organisations have made strides in improving their diversity and inclusion practices, there is still much work to be done. One area where diversity and inclusion are especially critical is in the field of risk management and cyber security.
In support of International Women’s Day 2023, Acuity is proud to take this opportunity to highlight the importance of diversity in risk management and cyber security and how it can help organisations better protect themselves from cyber threats.
As Louisa Schneller, Enterprise Risk Management Consultant and ISRM Women In Security co-chair. aptly pointed out in our recent webinar with The Institute of Strategic Risk Management: “There’s a really clear business case for diverse teams (…) It’s been proven they’re more creative, more effective. And if we’re not using this as a tool then we’re not doing the best we can, we’re not being relevant to the business. So, I think in the last few years, since Covid, there’s been a real blossoming of understanding of the importance of DE&I (diversity, equity and inclusion). It’s evolving but I don’t think we’re there yet – we’ve got a way to go.”
At Acuity, we know that diversity is a crucial factor in risk management and cyber security for several reasons. Diversity can help to drive innovation, enhance communication, and build trust with stakeholders, all of which are critical components of successful risk management and cyber security. Here are some of the key reasons why diversity is essential in these areas:
One of the most significant benefits of diversity in risk management and cyber security is the range of perspectives that diverse individuals bring to the table. When we have a team of people with different backgrounds and experiences, we are better able to identify potential risks and develop more effective solutions to address them. This diversity of thought helps organisations to make better-informed decisions and take more comprehensive approaches to risk management.
A more diverse team is better equipped to identify and assess risks that may be overlooked by a less diverse team. This is because people from different backgrounds and cultures may have different perspectives on what constitutes a risk, and they may have different ideas about how to mitigate that risk. By taking a more comprehensive approach to risk assessment, organisations can identify potential risks and develop more effective strategies for managing those risks.
Diversity also plays a critical role in driving innovation in risk management and cyber security. When we have a diverse team, we are more likely to develop innovative solutions to complex problems. This is because people from different backgrounds bring unique perspectives and experiences that can help to identify new approaches and techniques that may not have been considered before.
Effective communication is essential in risk management and cyber security. A diverse team can help to ensure that communication is clear and effective, as team members with different backgrounds may have different communication styles and preferences. This can help to prevent misunderstandings and ensure that everyone is on the same page when it comes to risk management strategies.
Finally, diversity can help to build trust between an organisation and its stakeholders. When an organisation has a diverse team that is representative of its customers, partners, and other stakeholders, it sends a message that it values and respects diversity. This can help to build trust and strengthen relationships with those stakeholders, which is essential for effective risk management and cyber security.
“Diversity is essential not just in risk management and cyber security. In my experience as a sales leader across a variety of industries I have noticed that by bringing together a team of individuals with different backgrounds and perspectives, organisations can ensure a bigger breadth of experience which, through sharing knowledge and learning from each other, performs better.”
“I am very passionate about diversity. I believe, having seen it across customers as well as in the organisations I have been a part of, that – with diverse teams on their side – organisations can develop more effective risk management strategies that are better able to address the complex and evolving threats posed by cyber attacks”, said Acuity Chief Commercial Officer Kerry Chambers.
Happy International Women’ s Day to all risk management and security professionals who are women – we are grateful for you today and every day.
